Bitter Sweet

This is the second owl painting for a friend of mine, the first one was the rye whiskey painting with the owl skeleton. I think they'll go good together. At the moment the owl is just in pencil so you can't really see what's going on. It's perched on the lemon tree holding a dead rat in it's mouth, beautiful animal, deadly killer, bitter sweet. I got the idea for the "lemon extract" add from the same book of old ads and letter type styles that I got the idea for the "rye whiskey" painting. I should be done with this already but the holidays and winter lethargy have kept things at snail's pace.

Rye Whiskey 2

First attempt at cross hatching, I think I'm gonna keep going with it.

Ego Te Absolvo

All done. It's kind of big so I added a couple close ups.

Almost done... I think.

In the last few days I've spent more time staring at this the I've spent actually working on it. I feel like it needs something else. Not sure.

Coming along

Alright, I think it's going to turn out well. I keep running into problems with this one but so far they've all been solvable. It's pretty much just a combination of older paintings, but I've assigned all the characters metaphorical roles in an attempt to tell a story. I don't know if anyone will get it but me, but that's o.k. Like listening to a metal song and then reading the lyrics, it's usually better when you leave it to your imagination.

Reference Photo

I've been working on a painting of the apocalypse and this is a reference photo I took. It's been going well but slow. It's a lot bigger and has more stuff going on in it than the other ones I've been doing lately. Exciting stuff! I can't wait to start coloring it in.

Dead Deer

I found this while out hiking by the river with a couple friends the other day. There are some really beautiful spots around Portland. Later in the day one of my friends fell a good ten feet into a pile of rocks and broke his shoulder promptly ending our excursion. At least he didn't land on his head.

More coffee!

I've been painting everything with coffee lately. This is an old drawing but I thought it could use a little color.

I slaughtered the cow

My aunt Becky asked me to make her a painting and I said I would but that I was going to take advantage of the situation to make something stupid. Not sucky stupid, just retarded stupid. Know what I mean? I like it though. I painted the cow with as much realism as I could and then flicked water on it to give it a shotgunned kind of effect.

Alright. It's almost 4 in the morning but I think it's done. I was only going to add a little more to it but I kept getting more ideas and putting them in. It took longer to finish than I thought it would, but I think it looks a lot better than it did before. The skeleton still doesn't show up that well in the photo but it's showing up well in the actual painting. I darkened the skeleton which helped, and then painted it with coffee. All of the tan background color is just coffee too. I'd seen other people do it and liked the feel that it gave. Looks like old parchment paper.

Here it is. I like the color, but the owl skeleton doesn't show up all that well. I'm gonna try to put a border around it so that it pops out a little better.

I have this book of old typefaces and graphic styles. It has a lot if old pharmaceutical ads in it and I always wanted to do something with the ones for medicinal whiskey. Somehow the dead bird seems fitting. I spent all day making a stamp for a corn cob. I think this one's gonna be good.

Owl

Step one complete.

Owl

My friend Aja commissioned me to do two owl paintings. This is what I've got so far. Not sure what I'm gonna do for a background but I knew I wanted to do some more graphite work. I like the contrast that it makes and I haven't done anything like that in a while. It's a little intimidating to do an entire skeleton in pencil. Very time consuming.

Self Portrait

This is what I've done since I've been back. It's a blind contour drawing I did of a photo of myself. I might mess with it a little more, I don't really like the color. The idea was to make it look like it had been painted on top of piece of floral wallpaper, but I might just cut it up then actually glue it to a piece of wallpaper. I'd have to find the right wallpaper though.

Back from Alaska!

Had a blast, played music on big run down boat that had been dragged into the middle of the woods for a festival(classic), took a small amount of hallucinogines, drank a large amount of booze, did some nacho slinging at the state fair, and got a little over zealous with a padded sword that I got for my birthday which really hurt when used with a little force(sorry Michaela, Garett, Aurora, Jessy and any other undeserved victims of a severe pummeling). I had a couple pictures from the trip but sadly they all got erased when I tried to update my phone, so you'll have to use your imagination.
I just moved into a new apartment and plan on leaving it as little as possible for the duration of what's probably going to be another cold and rainy winter in Ptown. Just gonna draw.

Hiatus

Not much going on in the way of drawing these days. Playing a lot of music to get ready for the Trapper Creek Music and Arts Festival in few weeks. Some how we're never quite prepared.

Some left over ideas

I got the basic idea for this painting off of this handkerchief I got in Guadalajara Mexico.

I Am Soulfully Intense! Bow Before Your New Over Loard!

The decent of the all seeing, 10,000 armed, idiot, crab, sun god of destruction and insanity.

Before and after... I hadda do it.

It's summer, and having that fro was like having a fur hat on all day. Sorry fro, it was fun while it lasted.

Grenada Gazelle Demo!

Here it is folks, the infamous "Granada Gazelle" demo disc. This little gem comes in it's very own paper lunch sack containing a folded poster with lyrics on the back. Each and every copy was hand, cut, folded and pasted. Thousands of hours of thankless labor by little Asian hands.

For your listening pleasure, click here to download one of the songs.

$10 and the entire EP will be shipped to your door.

Baby Jesus and The Drunken Goat

My friend gets photos from second hand stores and then tweaks them in different ways. I thought it was a cool idea so picked some up myself and this is what I came up with. It's hard to unify a bunch of photos that have no previous ties of any kind. I think it's a little scattered, but it's got some potential.

Ahhhhh, it was a long and difficult journey but the horse now has home.

North to AK

Building a barn with mama.

Monday, March 1, 2010

Here's the ref. photo I took. I thought it was a cool picture.

I got tired of drawing the same things all the time so I thought I'd try something new and draw some skulls with a floral background. This one was kind of practice run for a bigger drawing I'm brainstorming for... There will be lots of skulls.

It's done! Took about a month or more, but I'm pretty happy with it so it was worth the wait. My friend lent me his collection of animal skulls and I've been getting a lot of use out of them.

Monday, February 15, 2010

Ha ha ha! The line between creepy and cheesy is a thin one and I believe I crossed it. Oh well. I was trying to do a take off Horiyoshi III's decapitation paintings, but I think it looks more like Whoopi Goldburg's skull.

This little number's a work in progress. Been having trouble figuring out the background, but all good things come to those who wait and all that.
